Factors Affecting the CLAT Cut-off 2026
The CLAT cut-off determines the minimum marks required for candidates to seek admission into the NLUs. There are some major factors that affected the exam cut-off.
- The difficulty level of the exam always affected the cut-off marks. More challenging questions typically help in lower cutoff marks, and easier papers lead to higher cutoff marks.
- Seat availability in the Law colleges also affected the cutoff marks. If the number of sheets is few, then it can lead to a higher cutoff.
- The number of applicants also plays a vital role in setting the cutoff. If the number of candidates is less compared to the last few years, then there is a high chance for a low cutoff.
- Apart from the above reason, the reservation policy also affected the cutoff marks, because each category has different cutoff marks according to the reserved seat.
- The domicile policy also affected the cutoff marks, because some NLUs reserved seats for local domicile students.
How to Use CLAT Cut-Offs to Choose Your NLU?
1. See which NLUs match your score
- Compare your expected score with the old cut-offs.
- This helps you know which NLUs you can get and which are too high.
2. Make three groups of NLUs
- Reach: Hard to get
- Match: Good chance
- Safe: Almost sure
This keeps your list balanced.
3. Choose the college first
- Most of the time, the NLU name and placements matter more than BA LLB or BBA LLB.
- Choose the course first only if you really prefer one.
4. Use your category’s cut-offs
- General, SC, ST, OBC, and EWS all have different cut-offs.
- So use the cut-offs for your category only.
5. Use your home-state quota
- Some NLUs give an extra advantage to students from the same state.
- If this applies to you, put those NLUs higher.
6. Add as many NLUs as possible
- Don’t add only a few.
- More options = more chances in later rounds.
7. Don’t panic after Round 1
- Cut-offs usually drop in later rounds.
- You may get a better NLU in Round 2–5.
